(DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 25, 2017) — SME – an organization dedicated to training and developing the manufacturing workforce – is pleased to announce Harper College as one of its inaugural Institutional members.
Harper College, an academic institution based in Palatine, Illinois, has joined Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and Grand Valley State University of Allendale, Michigan, as SME’s first institutional members.
“We find it important that our instructors stay updated with the evolving manufacturing trends and technology,” said Stuart Templeton, the manufacturing program specialist at Harper College. “With the apparent industry skills gap, it’s imperative that we are equipped to train the next generation. SME’s program can us help better prepare.”
Harper College received Tooling U-SME’s 2016 Platinum Education Center (TUPEC) Award for working with local industry to prepare students for manufacturing jobs in their communities. Through Harper’s earn-and-learn program, students gain hands-on experience from apprenticeships and internships, while taking classes at the college.
Today, SME announced the launch of the institutional membership program, which is now offered to all academic institutions. The program connects universities or colleges to manufacturing professionals of the SME network. Alongside the networking opportunities, it includes reduced member pricing for SME trade shows and conferences, access to industry-focused publications, and opportunities for research and certifications. Additionally, five of the institution’s faculty or staff will receive a one-year SME membership.
