This paper presents some results obtained from a series of experiments in which AISI 1045 steel was turned on a lathe using cemented carbide ceramic, and cermet inserts. The input parameters were tangential cutting speed, depth of cut, feed rate, and duration of cutting. The monitored output parameters were the cutting forces in three mutually perpendicular directions (namely, axial, radial, and tangential cutting forces), tool flank wear, tool crater wear, and surface roughness of the finished workpiece. Marked differences were seen in the performance characteristics of the three cutting tool materials as reflected in the output parameters.
