Consumer-durable products are designed for better aesthetics and ease of use for a large group of consumers. The industrial designer has a great responsibility for designing such products. A large number of materials and finishing technologies are at his or her disposal. In the recent past plastics have replaced metals successfully as materials of construction at low temperature. Plastics help large-scale production rates, easy moulding, lower weight, miniaturization, and simplified assembly. Plastic articles are finished/decorated by a variety of techniques--mechanical effects, coatings, etc. The design of the product and the finishing techniques are highly interdependent and affect the cost and aesthetics of the consumer durable products.
