Listed below are the names of each SME scholarship offered. Click on each of the highlighted scholarship names to look at a more detailed list of required criteria and/or read about the history/background information of each scholarship.

Successful scholarship applicants will receive a minimum award of $1,000. On average the Foundation awards over 100 scholarships annually.

Eligibility Requirements

All Applicants Must:
  • Be pursuing a degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, or a closely related manufacturing field of study.
  • Reside in and attend an accredited institution in the United States or Canada.
  • Meet minimum requirements as outlined in the individual scholarship descriptions.

The application and supporting documentation for scholarships must be submitted online by February 1.

Graduating High School Seniors

Applicants for one or more of the following scholarships must be graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue as full-time students an undergraduate degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or a closely related engineering field of study at an accredited college or university and meet the specific criteria for the desired scholarship.


SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a child or grandchild of an SME member, be either a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student with no more than 30 credit hours, and have a minimum SAT score of 1000, and/or ACT score of 21.

Albert E. Wischmeyer Memorial Scholarship
GPA Required (minimum overall): 2.5
Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or current undergraduate student who is a current resident of Western New York State (West of Interstate 81) and must plan to attend or be enrolled in an accredited degree program in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or mechanical technology at a college or university in New York State.

Caterpillar Scholars Award
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering degree program, have completed a minimum of 30 college credit hours, and be seeking a career in manufacturing engineering. Preference will be given to students who have participated in a STEPS camp. All minority scholarship applicants may apply as incoming freshmen.

Chapter 4 - Lawrence A. Wacker Memorial Award
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating high school senior and a current undergraduate student accepted to or enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing, mechanical or industrial engineering at a college or university in the state of Wisconsin.

Chapter 67 - Phoenix Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a graduating high school senior or current undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or a closely related field and who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in Arizona.

Chapter 93 - Albuquerque Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be entering freshmen or current undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or a related field who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in New Mexico.

Chapter 311 -Tri City Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking a bachelor's degree in manufacturing, mechanical, or industrial engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology or closely related field of study who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in the state of Michigan.

E. Wayne Kay Community College Scholarship
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating high school student in their senior year who commits to enroll in a manufacturing engineering or technology program at an accredited community college, trade school, or other two-year degree-granting institution which offers programs in manufacturing or a closely related field.

E. Wayne Kay High School Scholarship
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a graduating high school student in their senior year who commit to enroll in a manufacturing engineering or technology program at an accredited college or university as a full-time freshman in the current summer or fall semester.

Edward S. Roth Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be an U.S. citizen and current full-time undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited four-year degree program in Manufacturing Engineering at the one of the 13 listed ABET accredited schools (see criteria for list) seeking a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Preferences will be given to students demonstrating financial need, minority students and students participating in a Co-Op program.

Gene Haas Foundation Manufacturing Technology Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: All applicants must attend the Careers in Technology event at EASTEC which will be held on May 22, 2008 at the Eastern States Exposition Grounds, West Springfield, Massachusetts. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student pursuing an associates or baccalaureate degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or other closely related field of study.

SME Education Foundation – FIRSTRobotics Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.0
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking an associate's degree or bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing technology, or a closely related field of study. Applicants must have participated in a FIRSTRobotics Competition or FIRSTTech Challenge during high school.

SME Ford PAS/Henry Ford Academy Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be current High School seniors, seeking to pursue a bachelor/associate degree in engineering or technology, and planning to attend an accredited college or university in the United States in the Fall of 2009. Ford PAS Applicants must be a past or present student of Ford PAS. Henry Ford Academy applicants must also be students at Henry Ford Academy.

Walt Bartram Memorial Education Award (Region 12 & Chapter 119)
GPA Required (minimum overall): 2.5
Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating high school student planning on enrolling or a current full-time undergraduate student who must be enrolled in manufacturing engineering or a related field of study at a college or university within the areas of Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California. Also applicants must be SME members unless they are high school students.


Current Undergraduate Students

Applicants for one or more of the following scholarships must be current undergraduate students enrolled in a manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, or a closely related field of study at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada, and meet the specific criteria.

Allen & Loureena Weber Scholarship
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking an associate's degree, bachelor's degree or graduate degree in manufacturing, mechanical, industrial engineering, engineering technology, or industrial technology at the University of Cincinnati, or a University located in the State of Kentucky and have a satisfactory grade point average.

Alvin & June Sabroff Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing engineering, technology, or a closely related field of study. Preference is given to students who seek their education in the state of Ohio.

Arthur and Gladys Cervenka Scholarship
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering or technology degree program and have completed a minimum of 30 college credit hours. Preference is given, but not limited, to students attending a college or university in the state of Florida.

Caterpillar Scholars Award
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering degree program, have completed a minimum of 30 college credit hours, and be seeking a career in manufacturing engineering. Preference will be given to students who have participated in a STEPS camp. All minority scholarship applicants may apply as incoming freshmen.

Chapter One - Detroit Founding Chapter Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or closely related degree or certificate program at one of the following sponsored institutions.

  • Wayne State University, Student Chapter S004
  • Lawrence Technological University, Student Chapter S011
  • University of Detroit-Mercy, Student Chapter S081
  • Focus: Hope, Center for Advanced Technologies, Student Chapter S279
  • Henry Ford Community College, Student Chapter S331
  • Macomb Community College, Student Chapter S071
  • University of Michigan - Dearborn, Student Chapter S326

Applicants must also be involved in their selected school's SME Student Chapter. One award will be available in each of the following three academic levels (Associate, Baccalaureate, Graduate) to a student member of the SME student chapters sponsored by Detroit Chapter One. Part-time students may apply.

Chapter 4 - Lawrence A. Wacker Memorial Award
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating high school senior and a current undergraduate student accepted to or enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing, mechanical or industrial engineering at a college or university in the state of Wisconsin.

Chapter 6 - Fairfield County Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student pursing a degree in engineering or a manufacturing-related field at an accredited college or university. Preferences are given to, but not limited to, being a resident and/or a student residing in the eastern part of the United States.

Chapter 17 - St. Louis Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Applicants must be full-time or part-time undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing engineering, industrial technology, or other manufacturing related program. Preferences are given to, but not limited to, residents of the St. Louis area or students residing in the state of Missouri.

Chapter 23 - Quad Cities Iowa / Illinois Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Scholarship applicant must be entering freshman or current undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or a related field who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in Iowa or Illinois.

Chapter 31 - Peoria Endowed Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be seeking a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing technology or a manufacturing related degree program at either Bradley University (Peoria, Illinois) or Illinois State University (Normal, Illinois).

Chapter 39 - Seattle Memorial Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking an associate's degree or bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing technology, or a closely related field of study. Preference is given to residents of the state of Washington or students who seek their education in the state of Washington.

Chapter 52 - Wichita Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: All applicants must be seeking an associate's degree, bachelor's degree or graduate degree in manufacturing, mechanical, or industrial engineering, engineering technology, or industrial technology at an accredited public or private college or university in Kansas, Oklahoma or Missouri.

Chapter 56 - Fort Wayne Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: All applicants must be seeking an associate's, bachelor's, or graduate degree in manufacturing, mechanical or industrial engineering, engineering technology, or industrial technology at an accredited public or private college or university in Indiana.

Chapter 63 - Portland James E. Morrow Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Applicants may be any student who is currently pursuing a career in manufacturing or a related field. Preference will be given to students planning to attend Oregon or southwest Washington schools, as this is the focus area of SME Chapter 63. Preference will also be given to applicants who reside within the states of Oregon and southwest Washington.

Chapter 63 - Portland Uncle Bud Smith Scholarship
GPA required: 2.5
Criteria: Applicants may be any student who is currently pursuing a career in manufacturing or a related field. Preference will be given to students planning to attend Oregon or southwest Washington schools, as this is the focus area of SME Chapter 63. Preference will also be given to applicants who reside within the states of Oregon and southwest Washington.

Chapter 67 - Phoenix Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a graduating high school senior or current undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or a closely related field and who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in Arizona.

Chapter 77 - Denver Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking an associate's degree or bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing technology, or a closely related field of study. Preference is given to students who are residents in the state of Colorado or students who be attending a university in the state of Colorado.

Chapter 93 - Albuquerque Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be entering freshmen or current undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering or a related field who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in New Mexico.

Chapter 105 - Memphis, Les Segar Memorial Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking an associate's degree or bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing technology, or a closely related field of study. Preference is given to students who are residents in the state of Tennessee or who will be attending the University of Memphis.

Chapter 116 - Kalamazoo Roscoe Douglas Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a current undergraduate student at Western Michigan University with at least 30 credit hours, seeking a career in manufacturing engineering or manufacturing engineering technology.

Chapter 198 - Downriver Detroit Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking an associate's degree, bachelor's degree or graduate degree in manufacturing, mechanical, or industrial engineering, engineering technology, or industrial technology and attend an accredited public or private college or university in the state of Michigan.

Chapter 311 -Tri City Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be seeking a bachelor's degree in manufacturing, mechanical, or industrial engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology or closely related field of study who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in the state of Michigan.

Clarence and Josephine Myers Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student pursing a degree in engineering or a manufacturing-related field at a college within the state of Indiana.

Clinton J. Helton Manufacturing Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate in a manufacturing engineering or technology program, have at least 30 college credit hours, and attend at one of approved Colorado colleges listed below:

  • Colorado State University
  • University of Colorado - all campuses

Connie and Robert T. Gunter Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.5
Criteria: Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering or technology degree program, have at least 30 college credit hours.

E. Wayne Kay Community College Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be full-time entering freshmen or sophomore undergraduate students at a two year Community College, trade school, or other two-year degree-granting institution, which offers programs in manufacturing or a closely related field and have less than 60 college credit hours.

E. Wayne Kay Co-Op Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be an undergraduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering or technology degree program, working through a co-op program in a manufacturing related environment, and have at least 30 college credit hours.

GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing engineering or technology or a closely related field.

Edward S. Roth Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0

Future Leaders of Manufacturing Scholarships
Created in partnership with SME, these scholarships and the application process for them were designed to strengthen ties with SME's student chapters. Giuliano Mazzetti Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing engineering or technology with a minimum of 30 college credit hours.

Lucile B. Kaufman Women's Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be a FEMALE full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing engineering or technology with a minimum of 30 college credit hours.

Myrtle and Earl Walker Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at an accredited trade school or degree-granting institution which offers programs in manufacturing engineering or technology with a minimum of 15 college credit hours.

North Central (Region 9) Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be an undergraduate student seeking an associate's degree or bachelor's degree at a two or four year college/university within the areas of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan.

Prof. George Schneider, Jr. Manufacturing Technology Education Scholarship
GPA Required: 2.5
Criteria: All applicants must be a part-time or full-time student who are seeking a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, technology or a closely related field. Two scholarships will be awarded one at Lawrence Technological University and the other at Kent State University.

SME Directors Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.5
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student currently enrolled in a manufacturing degree program at a U.S. or Canadian college with a minimum of 30 college credit hours.

SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship
GPA Required (minimum overall): 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be a child or grandchild of an SME member, be either a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student with no more than 30 credit hours, and have a minimum SAT score of 1000, and/or ACT score of 21.

Walt Bartram Memorial Education Award (Region 12 & Chapter 119)

William E. Weisel Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in an engineering or technology program in the United States or Canada. Preference will be given to a student seeking a career in robotics or automated systems used in manufacturing. Consideration will be given to students who intend to apply their knowledge in the sub-specialty of medical robotics.


Graduate Students

Applicants for the following scholarships must be accepted into a graduate program for a Masters or Doctorate degree, have proven scholastic ability, exemplary character and leadership capability, and have demonstrated the potential for future leadership in the profession.

Chapter One - Detroit Founding Chapter Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or closely related degree or certificate program at one of the following sponsored institutions.

Criteria: All applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student pursing a degree in engineering or a manufacturing-related field at a college within the state of Indiana.

E. Wayne Kay Graduate Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: All applicants must be a full-time student and accepted in a graduate program for a Masters or Doctorate degree with a manufacturing or industrial engineering emphasis.

Edward S. Roth Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship
GPA Required: 3.0
Criteria: Scholarship applicants must be an U.S. citizen and current full-time undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited four-year degree program in Manufacturing Engineering at the one of the 13 listed ABET accredited schools (see criteria for list) seeking a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Preferences will be given to students demonstrating financial need, minority students and students participating in a Co-Op program. Some preferences may be given to graduating high school seniors and graduate students.
