Toyota Says It’s Improving Fuel Efficiency, Factories

Toyota Motor Corp. says it’s increasing the fuel efficiency of its vehicles and improving its factory operations.“Toyota has increased the overall fuel efficiency of its powertrains” by about 25% and “overall power output” by more than 15% the company said in a March 26 update about its Global Vision plan..With factories, Toyota said its plants are running at more than 90%, up from 70% in 2009, when a major recession cut demand for new cars and trucks. Toyota said it’s moving to “simple and slim” production lines, including smaller paint booth “and switch to compact equipment.” Full Article

LIFT Plans to Coordinate With Composites Manufacturing Institute

A Detroit-based group working on lightweight materials plans to coordinate with a similar Tennessee-based organization trying to develop composite materials.“We’re looking at how we should collaborate,” said Lawrence Brown, executive director of Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow, or LIFT, the Detroit-based group that’s part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, or NNMI, an initiative of the Obama administration to speed development of advanced manufacturing.   Full Article

EOS named Glynn Fletcher president of EOS of North America, as the 3D printing company moves to integrate additive manufacturing with traditional subtractive production methods. Fletcher was president of GF Machining Solutions LLC in Lincolnshire, IL. EOS and GF Machining have jointly demonstrated systems that combine both manufacturing techniques. Customers want to integrate 3D printing “with more traditional manufacturing processes,” Hans Langer, CEO of EOS, said in a statement. Full Article

Obama Announces Ninth Manufacturing Institute

The Obama administration today announced a competition for manufacturers and universities to form the ninth manufacturing innovation institute, this one to concentrate on textiles and fibers.The US government will invest $75 million while private entities are to invest another $75 million, according to a White House statement.
